German Butter Cookies

Even though wine is an ingredient, they lack that “boozy” taste.  This is the quintessential Christmas cookie in my house. Perfectly spiced, yet sweet and so lovely with a cup of cocoa or coffee.

Ingredients
  • 6 cups all purpose flour
  • 1½ tablespoons cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup white wine, such as a reisling
Instructions
  1. Beat butter with mixer, gradually add 2 cups of sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in eggs, one a time. Now, alternatively beat in dry ingredients and wine ⅓ at a time.
  3. Divide the dough into quarters. Wrap in cling film and chill overnight.
  4. On a floured surface, roll dough out to ¼ inch thick. Cut into desired shapes. Bake in a preheated 350 F oven for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Cookies are best when they have sat for at least a week.
